6 Amazing Benefits of Summer Rainstorms

6/6/2023 (Permalink)

rainstorm on street While the benefits of summer storms are significant, it's important to remember that severe storms can also pose risks to personal safety & property.

While summer storms can bring inconveniences and hazards, they also offer certain benefits to the environment and ecosystems. Here are a few advantages of summer storms:

  • Replenishing Water Supply: Summer storms contribute to replenishing the water supply, especially in areas that experience drought or water scarcity. The rainfall from these storms helps to recharge groundwater reserves, replenish rivers and lakes, and maintain the overall water balance in ecosystems.
  • Promoting Plant Growth: Adequate rainfall from summer storms is essential for plant growth and agriculture. The moisture provided by the storms nourishes plants, helping them thrive and produce crops. This is particularly beneficial for farmers and gardeners who rely on rainfall for irrigation purposes.
  • Reducing Heat and Humidity: Summer storms often bring temporary relief from the intense heat and humidity associated with the season. The rain and cooler air that accompany the storms can provide a brief respite, making the environment more comfortable for outdoor activities and providing relief to humans and animals.
  • Clearing the Air: Summer storms help cleanse the air by washing away pollutants and allergens, such as dust, pollen, and smog. The rain can remove these particles from the atmosphere, resulting in cleaner and fresher air quality.
  • Ecological Balance: Storms play a role in maintaining the ecological balance of ecosystems. They provide water sources for various organisms, replenish natural habitats, and support the overall health of flora and fauna. Additionally, storm-related changes in temperature and humidity can trigger specific ecological processes, such as seed germination and insect activity.
  • Aesthetic Appeal: Some people appreciate the dramatic and awe-inspiring nature of summer storms. Lightning displays, dark storm clouds, and the sound of rain can create a unique atmosphere, inspiring artists, photographers, and nature enthusiasts.

While the benefits of summer storms are significant, it's important to remember that severe storms can also pose risks to personal safety and property. It's crucial to stay informed about weather conditions, follow any safety precautions, and be prepared for potential hazards associated with these storms.

Storms can take a toll on your home and commercial property. They can cause flooding, roof damage, and more. What is a Ground Blizzard in Homeworth, OH?

2/20/2023 (Permalink)

now covering ground and cars Always be prepared in the winter months by having a set of gloves, hat, boots, warm shoes and all the accessories needed to keep you warm in cold weat

According to Weather.gov, the most well-known blizzards are winter storms that produce several inches occurring with strong winds that cause blowing snow and whiteout conditions, but not all blizzards happen this way. In the Midwest, ground blizzards develop with little or no concurrent (or new) snowfall. The typical ground blizzard occurs when an Arctic cold front moves through the region, causing temperatures to drop and winds to increase quite rapidly, often reaching gusts of 50 to 60 mph.

If there are several inches of deep fresh snow on the ground, this strong wind will quickly pick up the snow and create whiteout conditions. Another reason these blizzards are dangerous is the cold temperatures that follow behind the Arctic front. Anyone stranded in their vehicle or forced to walk outside is at risk of frostbite or hypothermia. Always be prepared in the winter months by having a set of gloves, hat, boots, warm shoes and all the accessories needed to keep you warm in cold weather. It wouldn’t hurt to keep a blanket in your car as well as other heating essentials.

How to Handle Wind, Thunder, and Rain in Salem

12/14/2022 (Permalink)

dark clouds Storms have the potential to pop up quickly, cause unexpected damage, and then leave by the morning.

Storms have the potential to pop up quickly, cause unexpected damage, and then leave by the morning. More specifically, strong winds can cause trees and tree branches to topple over and find a new home on your house or blow shingles off your roof. The four areas of your Austintown, Columbiana, East Palestine, and surrounding areas home that are most damaged are roofs, windows, doors, and garages. Before even hearing news that a severe storm carrying strong winds is on the way, there are several steps that you can take to protect your Lowellville and Poland home from serious wind damage.

Maintain Landscape and Trees

Pay close attention to any trees that surround your Newburgh Heights home. Wind can cause tree branches to break off or the entire tree to fall, which can pose a serious threat to the structure of your home if the tree is planted too close.  Be mindful not to over-water trees, usually just the rain provides enough water in Northeast, Ohio. Over-watering your trees often results in shallow, weak root systems, which increases the chances of the tree taking a spill into your yard or house. In addition, objects such as patio furniture, grills, or other backyard items can grow some wings and fly away during strong winds.

Inspect the Roof

When was the last time you were on your roof? Probably not last week. Since they are not in our usual line of sight, sometimes we are not aware of the condition of our roofs or shingles until serious damage has been inflicted upon them. The best way to prevent unexpected, serious roof damage is to inspect the roof at least twice per year. Look for signs of damage such as loose or missing shingles and water damage in the attic. If you are not a “climb onto my roof” type of person, then hiring a professional can provide insight and possible suggestions to make sure your roof stands the best chance of surviving the storm.  Finally, if possible, it may be beneficial to invest in weather-resistant shingles the next time they need to be replaced.

Reinforce Windows and Doors

Storm shutters on windows and doors can help protect them from flying debris caused by strong winds. You can purchase storm shutters or make your own by nailing plywood to windows and doors. Lastly, if particularly strong wind are expected in the Garfield Heights, Mayfield Heights, University Heights and surrounding area, garage door bracing kits can be useful, which will help keep the garage door in place during the storm.

Are You Ready for a Flood in Lowellville?

2/20/2022 (Permalink)

heavy rain on umbrella. Springtime is the peak season for floods due to heavier rains.

Springtime is the peak season for floods due to heavier rains. It is time for snow to melt and grass to grow. While we all cannot wait for the sun to shine again, the season does come with its downfalls. Heavy rains can lead to flooding in your home. Sometimes you can’t help the flooding, but it is good to know what weather may be headed your way ahead of time. Here are important tips to watch out for storms that are on the way from ReadyOhio:

A flood watch may be issued by the National Weather Service for the potential of rapid flooding from either torrential downpour, dam breaks or ice jam breaks. A flood watch may also be issued when the onset of flooding is much slower - usually greater than six hours. Watches can be issued up to 12 hours prior to the possible flood event. Listen to a NOAA Weather Radio or local television or radio news station for up-to-date weather information, including upgrades to flood warnings.

A flash flood warning signifies a short duration of intense rain or rapid flooding of counties, communities, streams, or urban areas. Flash floods may result from torrential downpours, dam breaks or ice jam breaks. Take immediate action to protect life and property. Evacuate the area. Move to higher ground. Do not drive through flooded roadways. Continue listening to local news station weather reports for up-to-date weather information and evacuation instructions.

A river flood warning is issued by the NWS for specific communities or areas along a river where flooding is imminent or occurring. River flood warnings will provide crest forecasts. Take immediate action to protect life and property. Evacuate the area. Move to higher ground. Do not drive through flooded roadways. Continue listening to local news station weather reports for up-to-date weather information and evacuation instructions

How at Risk is Mahoning County for Tornadoes?

4/20/2021 (Permalink)

picture shows a field with a twister. There haven't been more than a handful of tornadoes in the area since the 1950’s, and none have been over an F3 on the Fujita Scale.

Thankfully, Mahoning County does not have a rich history of tornadoes. There haven't been more than a handful of tornadoes in the area since the 1950’s, and none have been over an F3 on the Fujita Scale used to rank tornado’s strength. This may be surprising…

I say this because Mahoning County is actually more at risk for a tornado than you’d think!

USA.com has developed an index to determine how at risk a place is for tornadoes, conveniently titled the “Tornado Index Value.” The United States average is 136.45, and the Ohio average is 156.02. Mahoning County comes in with a Tornado Index Value of 174.97, considerably higher than the U.S. average.

With that being said, here are a few ways to stay prepared for a tornado in Mahoning County:

  • Identify a safe place in your house, typically your basement or an interior room on the lowest floor of your home
  • Listen to local weather warnings
  • Avoid bridges and overpasses when driving during a tornado

Is Your East Mahoning Home Ready for a Lightning Storm?

4/6/2021 (Permalink)

picture shows a lightning bolt coming out of a cloud striking a house Homeowners can install a “surge protection device” that if any electrical power surges into the home--- it will be diverted into the ground.

Spring is here! We have waited for the break in weather so patiently, and now that the warmer temps are here---SERVPRO of East Mahoning County wants to give our residents some lightning safety tips.

Practice, Practice, Practice!

It is an essential, lifesaving tip to get indoors when a lightning storm occurs. It may sound like common sense, but when placed in a dangerous situation, many people make mistakes. Ensure you are indoors, avoid concreate floors, metal structures, and not using electronics or water.

Ways to Protect Your Home Structure

If your home is in a storm zone---consider installing a “lightning protection system.” These systems create a path for lightning to travel that skips your home and goes underground. These are super innovative since they not only protect your home, but everything inside as well. Insurance companies say these prevent 99% of damage that would have occurred otherwise.

Ways to Protect Your Electronics

There are ways to protect the inside, just like the outside. Just like the “lightning protection system talked about above; homeowners can install a “surge protection device” that if any electrical power surges into the home--- it will be diverted into the ground.  These systems are normally used in conjunction with full lightning protection systems.

If you need help after a lightning storm, SERVPRO of East Mahoning County is here to help. We are the area’s number one storm team.

SERVPRO of East Mahoning County responds immediately to your flood and storm damage emergencies. We have the storm damage restoration experience and specialized equipment to restore your Youngstown home or business back to pre-storm condition.

The Real Cause of Pipe Breaks in East Mahoning County

2/22/2021 (Permalink)

Close up of an exterior pipe that is frozen Fun fact: Open cabinet doors on the colder days to allow the warm air from inside the home to keep the pipes warm.

Did you know pipes don’t burst because of ice expanding? It happens because of pressure inside of the pipes. Allow SERVPRO of East Mahoning County to explain the science of freezing pipes to our residents.

It has been an unbelievable cold February! SERVPRO has gotten our fair share of phone calls centered around pipes bursting here in Youngstown.

According to Live Science… “When water freezes, its molecules crystalize into an open hexagonal form, which takes up more space than when the molecules are in their liquid form — that is, the water molecules expand as they freeze. As the ice expands, it pushes water toward the closed faucet. This causes an immense amount of water pressure to build between the ice blockage and the faucet — eventually, the pipe ruptures under the pressure, usually at a spot where there's little or no ice.”

Pipes that are most at risk of freezing are located on the outside of the building insulation, such as, the basement, garage, and crawl spaces. As a homeowner, insulating these vulnerable pipes with fiberglass, foam sleeves or other types of insulation can help prevent them from bursting.

Here are a few little fun facts to keep the pipes in your home from freezing:

  • Keep the faucet open to allow the water to run. This helps prevent the water pressure from building up.
  • Open cabinet doors on the colder days to allow the warm air from inside the home to keep the pipes warm.
  • Insulate the exterior pipes.

Should you experience a pipe break at your home or business call the water restoration experts at SERVPRO of East Mahoning County. When flooding or a large storm hits Youngstown, SERVPRO is there to help our local residents and businesses with their water damaged properties.

Why Sleet Can be Hazardous to Your Home

12/16/2020 (Permalink)

Picture is a close up of a clay roof covered in ice and snow When significant amounts of sleet build up on the roof, real problems can happen.

Winter storms are a part of December. Especially in East Mahoning County. We see everything from heavy snowfalls, hail, to sleet and everything in between.

As a homeowner---you would not think sleet can do much damage to the structure of your home. If you are not savvy to the true definition of sleet---it is considered “freezing rain.” Sleet is also a type of precipitation that occurs when rain formed in warm air in the sky passes through a layer of cold air near the ground. Thicker layers of cold air create sleet, a slushy form of water that is semi-frozen by the time it reaches the Earth. Thinner layers do not give rain enough time to freeze until it hits the surface of the ground—it then forms a thin coat of ice wherever it lands. Sleet is much smaller pellets than hail, so the damage to the exterior of the home is much less, but that does not mean it is not causing harm.

When significant amounts of sleet build up on the roof, real problems can happen, especially if your roof or siding is old and worn out before the storm even hits. The older your roof shingles are the more brittle they become and can come off easily. Sleet creates moisture and can get underneath the loose shingles. This creates a magnitude of problems such as: water leaking into your attic, shingles falling off, and ice dams.

The same thing can also affect the siding. Old brittle aluminum, wood or vinyl siding can have cracks, chips, or holes for moisture to enter. Sleet can slide easily into the gaps---creating structural damage.

All of these things will lead to eventual water and mold damage. Which can add up to thousands of dollars in insurance claims and most likely money out of pocket.

Good thing SERVPRO of East Mahoning County is the leader in storm, fire, and water restoration. We are right here in your backyard helping Mahoning County residents. Prepare Your Home or Business for Cold Weather Now!

10/9/2020 (Permalink)

Oh, how those sweet memories from summer are starting to slip away. The chill of fall is already here. And us Ohioans know what is about to come. SERVPRO of East Mahoning County has made a checklist of the most important items to take a good, long look at before the snow starts.

  • Clean gutters of debris so melted snow will drain properly and away from the home.
  • Cut down on heating costs by checking windows and doors for gaps. Weatherstrip or calk to seal them up or decide if they need replaced.
  • Hire a chimney sweep---especially if you use your fireplace.
  • Change your furnace filter---changing the filter is perhaps the quickest and easiest way to maximize the efficiency of your heating system and to help purify your home’s air.
  • Get an inspection done on your furnace and boiler---This reduces the chances that you’ll find out there is a critical issue with your system while already relying on it.
  • Check batteries in smoke detectors---US Fire Administration says heating is the cause of 27 percent of structure fires!
  • Disconnect your garden hose---this prevents freezing of water in the pipes inside the house resulting in bursting of those pipes.
  • Make sure your sub pump is working properly. When discharge lines become frozen or clogged, the system fails. Discharge lines should be clear and covered.
  • Check for missing shingles on the roof---the building might be in danger of flood the next time it rains.
  • Purchase salt before the first snow---so you are prepared early!

If your East Mahoning County business or home loses the battle with Winter, we are here to help! We have crews available 24/7, 365 to make any snow storm disaster, “Like it never even happened.”

Phone with charger Keeping a back-up charger in your car will ensure you are never left with a dead phone!

Whether you have the new iPhone 11 Pro or are still slumming it with an iPhone 7 …the number of social media apps available to download and ways to stay connected are endless. Although Zoom and Google Meet keep you connected with your friends, technology can also help keep you safe during a storm!

Technology can be an essential tool in preparing for a storm, keeping you informed, and helping you communicate with others. Being prepared for a storm can offer peace of mind and security. Below are some storm safety tips, apps for your phone, and some cool ways to use already existing technology in a new way.

  • Follow the news and stay informed! You can download free apps onto your phone or tablet such as The Weather Channel to stay up to date with the newest information.
  • Store an extra copy of important information online. Services like Google Drive and Dropbox make it even easier to store important information such as insurance policies, medical records, identification documents, and even information about pets living in the home. This ensures information will be accessible to you should your home or business flood or catch fire. Your phone goes with you everywhere you go!
  • Let your family know you are safe. Whether you call, text, or video chat, it can give family members peace of mind to know you are safe. You can also check-in on Facebook.
  • Always keep a back-up charger in your car! Severe weather can strike at any time and you may not always be home. You never know when you may need to charge your phone and keeping a back-up charger in your car guarantees you will never be left with a dead phone.
  • Create an Emergency Ready Profile (ERP) for your business. The Emergency Ready Profile will be created for you by a SERVPRO worker free of charge. It will provide important facility details such as valve shut-off locations for water, electric, and gas and priority contact information. It will be available to you on your smartphone or tablet any time, day or night.

Mitigating Damage Before the Storm

4/27/2020 (Permalink)

Fallen tree on house after a storm SERVPRO® was recently called to help after a severe storm caused significant damage to this home.

Here in Northeast Ohio, strong storms are most common during the spring and summer months. Although storm damage is often inevitable, there are ways to be better prepared and to help mitigate the damage before severe weather strikes.

According to the National Weather Service, these are some things you can do in or around your home prior to a storm:

  • Trim trees and shrubs
    • Trees close to your home can snap or uproot
    • High wind can turn branches into projectiles during the storm
  • Remove debris from your yard
    • Bring in outdoor furniture
    • Lawn chairs, trampolines, pool supplies, etc can be turned into flying debris
  • Cover windows
    • This is necessary in order to guard against flying debris
    • Plywood or professionally installed shutters are best
    • Taping windows DOES NOTHING to protect your home from wind!
  • Reinforce garage doors
    • This will prevent wind from entering and causing dangerous/expensive damage
  • Proper maintenance
    • Ensure that roofing materials, fencing, etc. are properly maintained and in good condition
    • This will allow them to be more resistant to wind damage
  • Clear clogged rain gutters and downspouts
    • This will help with the flow of water during heavy rainfall

It’s also important to have a storm safety plan in place for you and your family. This can include an emergency evacuation or shelter plan, a list of important personal information, and a first aid kit.

Taking these steps can help minimize property damage, however, you may still be in need of professional assistance from SERVPRO® of East Mahoning County. As storm and water damage specialists, our job is to quickly help make it “Like it never even happened.”

Our team can be reached 24/7 and can provide an immediate response. Should you need our services, we can be reached at 330-536-7477 or online. We are always Here to Help®!

4/14/2020 (Permalink)

image of a scared dog hiding underneath a bed In preparation for a potential dangerous storm, it is important to think about protecting your pets and having an evacuation plan for them

The spring and summer months ahead in Ohio and other parts of the midwest often bring bad storm weather. In preparation for a potential dangerous storm, it is important to think about protecting your pets and having an evacuation plan for them, in case you have to leave your home in a hurry.

The American Red Cross recommends having a ready-to-go emergency kit and storing it in a study container that is easily accessible. Do not place this kit high up or tucked away in an attic where you cannot grab it and go. Here’s what to include in your pet kit:

  1. Sturdy leashes
  2. A harness or carrier
  3. Pet food (Do not forget a manual can opener if you have a cat.)
  4. First aid kit
  5. Any pet medications
  6. Medical records in a waterproof container
  7. Garbage bags
  8. Pet toys
  9. Bottled water and a bowl
  10.  Feeding schedules
  11. Contact information for the owner and the veterinarian in case you are separated from  your pet.

Other things to think about ahead of any dangerous spring or summer storms are to make sure your pet has a collar with correct ID info. Be sure your pet has up to date vaccinations and consider getting your met micro-chipped. You can always message us on our Facebook page www.facebook.com/SERVPROemc/ if you have more questions about protecting your furry friends for a storm.

Thunderstorm Phobia in Pets

2/27/2020 (Permalink)

graphic showing a dog visibly afraid during a thunderstorm Take Note of Thunderstorm Phobia in your Pets

Spring and summer weather will be here before we know it and unfortunately thunderstorms go hand in hand with these seasons. Warm weather storms can be ferocious and usually very loud. If you have a four-legged, fury family member the chances are you notice their unusual behavior before, during, and even after these storms.

Watching your pet pace, pant, hide, and cry during these moments can be very sad and even take hours upon hours after the storm for them to return to behaving like the normal calm companions they usually are. It is very common for your pets to act this way and almost all of them do – this is called Thunderstorm Phobia.

Experts and veterinarians aren’t exactly sure what sets your pet off during these moments, but it is believed to be a combination of thunder, wind, lightning, pressure changes, and even very low frequency rumbles.  Below are some things you can do to prevent and care your pets when experiencing Thunderstorm Phobia:

Reward calm behavior year-round

  • If an owner only consoles their pet during these high anxiety moments it will only increase the pets’ anxiety and panicky behavior. Experts say to practice getting your pet to ‘settle’ on demand frequently even in low stress situations will reduce hardship during a storm.

Provide Safe Place

  • When storms take place, pay close attention to where your pet often migrates to. Safe places can be open boxes/crates in basements, interior rooms, bathrooms, etc. Make sure your pet can come and go easily and often to avoid even more stress.

Desensitize During Winter Months

  • Some people even play thunderstorm audio at low volume to where your pet will recognize it without panic. If your pet can handle this, and shows little to no signs of anxiety, you can increase the volume month after month. While doing this, be sure to give reward treats to your pets. This encourages your pets’ handling of storm noises.

Thunderstorms can be a very difficult time for your pet. It is important to watch and recognize their behavior closely during these times. It is also recommended to be pro-active in the necessary thunderstorm phobia training. This is often necessary to have your pet be able to calmly react during these warm weather storm.

Wet Basement Restoration in Mahoning County

12/27/2019 (Permalink)

totes on concrete floor with a few inches of standing water Water issues can be overwhelming! If your property incurs any, call us and we will make it, “Like it never even happened

Believe it or not 2019 is ending and the New Year lies ahead of us. With the new year, comes new goals, plans, and opportunities to prepare. SERVPRO is here to help you make sure your property is not left out of the 2020 preparation.

As a premier provider of professional water restoration services, we often assist property owners who have incurred an extensive amount of water damage in their basements.

These three tips are designed to help you protect your property as we approach the New Year!

  1. Review your deductible and coverage – make sure that you are adequately covered for services necessary in the event of water damage in your home. You will need mitigation services (the cleaning, drying and removal process), the rebuild (the restructuring of your drywall, flooring and cabinetry), and replacements (for any contents damaged such as furniture or family heirlooms)
  2. Check your sump pump – review the functionality of your sump pump often. Identifying an broken sump pump and replacing it for a couple of hundred dollars could save you thousands in the long run.
  3. Store Belongings Securely – any items in your basement that can, should be stored in plastic crates or on shelves. Everything from your children’s schoolwork, to family pictures, heirlooms, and daily products could be compromised in a water disaster. If the water source is Category 3 (contaminated water), then these items would be a total loss in most instances. Having them properly stored can save you a lot in the long run.

Being adequately prepared may ease some of the stress that comes with an unexpected flooded basement. Water issues can be overwhelming! If your property incurs any, call us and we will make it, “Like it never even happened.”

Preventing Winter Water Damage in Mahoning County

11/26/2019 (Permalink)

icicles with the text "winter water damage prevention" and SEVPRO rooftop logo By winterizing your home you can help improve your home’s security during the upcoming winter season.

When you think of storms, most people traditionally think of thunderstorms. These storms are usually accompanied by wind, rain, thunder, lightning and flooding. Here in North East Ohio, we experience this type of weather through spring, summer and fall.  However, as Ohioans we are also familiar with another type of storm, the winter storm. The Polar Vortex, The El Nino and La Nina, are weather patterns that can drastically affect our weather conditions throughout the winter months and wreak havoc on our homes.

Much like our spring and summer storms, there are things we can do to prepare for the upcoming winter months and the impending frigid temps. By winterizing your home you can help improve your home’s security during the upcoming season.

The following are some tips to help prevent damage to your home during a winter storm or prolonged, harsh, cold weather:

  1. Much like summer storms, keeping your gutters cleaned is imperative during the winter months as well. Uncleaned gutters can lead to ice dams, which can lead to shingle damage, roof damage and potentially interior damage to your home.
  2. Having any low hanging limbs trimmed around your house and power lines can be a huge benefit and a great preventative tactic. These limbs are usually the first to go when the ice begins to build up, and trimming can prevent a power outage or damage to your home.
  3. If you go south for the winter, or plan on traveling during potentially frigid months, keeping your heat at 55 degrees is very important. Winterizing your home during times of prolonged travel is the best way to go. The money spent to have your local plumber winterize your home vs. the cost of a potential pipe break makes this a “no brainer!”
  4. Insulating exterior walls where there are water lines is highly recommended. Of course, any improvements a homeowner can make to their home’s insulation is always a great idea for a multitude of reasons, specifically regarding this subject matter.
  5. When the temperatures begin to plummet and our overnight forecasts have us below zero for consecutive nights, take heed! Yes, this is an oldie but goodie, but worth noting, let your water run on a slow trickle in your sinks. (and please, make sure the drain is clear!!) An additional piece of advice, many people are annoyed by the sound of the running water, place a sponge in the sink under the trickle. This should help with the noise.
  6. Leave the door of your kitchen cabinets and bathroom vanities open during cold snaps and winter storms. Keeping the doors closed does not allow the heat to bring that space to room temperature. Keeping the doors open can mean the difference of several degrees, which can be the difference between pipe break and no break.

Here’s to hoping these tips have been helpful and to wishing you all a happy and safe holiday season! If your property incurs any damage from a busted pipe, winter storms, or any kinds of water damage – SERVPRO of East Mahoning County is here to help 24/7.

Call us at 330-536-7477 and we’ll help make it, “Like it never even happened.”

Typically, excessive rain and wind can leave your property vulnerable to water damage from flooding. Flooding is not the only way water can affect your home or business.

What are the Common Water Damage Scenarios?

Flooding - During a strong rainstorm, water can penetrate the roof shingles and leak into you home. Nearby lakes, rivers or even streams can overflow and cause flooding that can wreak havoc on your property.

Whatever the case, water that seeps into your home will cause damage. Water can rot wood and cause mold growth that will add up to costly repairs.

Burst Pipes - Most people do not examine the condition of the pipes in their home, nor do they know what a worn out pipe looks like. It may be worth it to hire an expert to evaluate the condition of the pipes in your home.

Ways to Protect your Basement from Winter Storm Damage

11/27/2018 (Permalink)

As fall turns into winter, we begin to see rains and snowfall which can cause water damage to your basement.

Here are 6 ways you can prepare and protect your basement from water damage caused by rain and melting snow:

  1. Downspouts Cleaned & Pointed Away from the House
A downspout is a pipe used to carry rainwater from your roof to a drain or to ground level. When downspouts are pointed towards the foundation, water has the capability to seep in. Point downspouts away from your home in a direction that slopes away from the foundation.

  2. Fix Cracks Quickly
Inspect your foundation yearly and fix cracks quickly. This will prevent water from creeping in through cracks and faults in your foundation - which typically aren't covered by insurance.

  3. Install a Sump Pump
A sump pump is used where basement flooding happens regularly. Sump pumps send water away from a house to a place where it is no longer problematic, such as a municipal storm drain or dry well. Sump pumps run on electricity, so it is important to check the pump regularly (especially during storms) to ensure it is running properly.

  4. Proper Storage
It is important to be proactive in protecting your belongings before a water damage situation occurs. Use plastic storage bins instead of cardboard boxes, and try to keep contents on a shelf rather than storing them on the floor.

  5. Install a Water Alarm
If you're planning to travel this summer, consider a water alarm for your home. They'll alert you should water levels inside start to rise - which can help save your home from damage.

  6. Check your Insurance Policy
The best thing you can do to protect your basement and contents is having the right kind of insurance and the right amount. Check with your agent to make sure your home and belongings are covered in the event of a sewer/drain backup, sump pump malfunction or flooding.

Like us on Facebook for more tips and updates on ways to make sure you, too, are Ready for Whatever Happens!

Storm Essentials

  1. Candles
  2. First Aid Kit
  3. Flash Light and Extra Batteries

  5. Water Bottles & Packaged Food

It is extremely important to make sure there are candles available in your home at all times.

A first aid kit should always be in your home, whether it is to prepare for a disaster or just to treat common injuries.

Flash light and extra batteries are essential during a storm. Even though there might be candles available, the candles should be in one room to avoid a fire.

Normally it is challenging to predict how long the power will be out. This is where battery powered radios come in handy.

Water bottles and packaged food are also efficient in case of all household appliances not functioning.

Let the Quarter Decide

10/25/2016 (Permalink)

Power outages are common during a storm, which means the electricity in a freezer is not keeping the food cold. It can be difficult to determine if a power outage occurred if you were not present during the storm. One away to determine whether the food in your freezer needs thrown out is by using a quarter. Freeze a cup of water before evacuating your home and put a quarter on top of the frozen water. If the quarter is sunk to the bottom of the cup after the storm, you should dispose all food stored in the freezer. The quarter sinking to the bottom means the food in the freezer has defrosted and it should be thrown out. This is a great method to determine if your food went bad in your New Middletown, Ohio home.

The recent storm, Hurricane Matthew abruptly transformed into a tropical cyclone affecting the states along the Atlantic coast. Residents were advised to evacuate immediately to avoid danger or harm the storm could cause. Countless homes and properties were destroyed after the storm leaving civilians with flooded homes and no power. 3 Essential Storm Aphorisms to Live By

8/24/2016 (Permalink)

1. “When thunder roars, go indoors”

This one is a given, you might have heard this phrase as a child from your parents while you were playing in the rain. Yes many of the best youthful memories occurred while playing in the rain, but as adults it is difficult to enjoy the rain since we are more aware of their damages.

2. “A lot of people like snow. I find it to be an unnecessary freezing of water”

As pretty as the snow is during the winter, we cannot dismiss the issues that arises throughout a snow storm. Snow is freezing water and water has not always had the best track record of affecting houses positively. The freezing water eventually melts and causes several damages to your gutters and down-pipes.

This is where you call SERVPRO to help clean and restore your damages.

3. “When it snows, you have two choices: shovel or make snow angels”

Making snow angels after a snow storm can be exceptionally tempting, but the snow around your house needs to be shoveled. I know it is common to just shovel the drive way, but shoveling around your house can be extremely beneficial. The snow around your house will eventually melt and seep into your basement if not shoveled.

Sometimes damages may occur no matter how many ways you try to prevent them, but luckily SERVPRO specializes in water cleanup and restoration.

Struthers, Ohio Basement Water Damage Cleanup

7/22/2016 (Permalink)

With a few heavy rains over the last week and countless more ahead, it's important to protect your Struthers basement (and everything in it) from potential water damage.

Here are 6 ways you can prepare and protect your basement from the heavy rains this summer:

This will prevent water from creeping in through cracks and faults in your foundation - which typically aren't coved by insurace.
