Oh, how those sweet memories from summer are starting to slip away. The chill of fall is already here. And us Ohioans know what is about to come. SERVPRO of East Mahoning County has made a checklist of the most important items to take a good, long look at before the snow starts.

  • Clean gutters of debris so melted snow will drain properly and away from the home.
  • Cut down on heating costs by checking windows and doors for gaps. Weatherstrip or calk to seal them up or decide if they need replaced.
  • Hire a chimney sweep---especially if you use your fireplace.
  • Change your furnace filter---changing the filter is perhaps the quickest and easiest way to maximize the efficiency of your heating system and to help purify your home’s air.
  • Get an inspection done on your furnace and boiler---This reduces the chances that you’ll find out there is a critical issue with your system while already relying on it.
  • Check batteries in smoke detectors---US Fire Administration says heating is the cause of 27 percent of structure fires!
  • Disconnect your garden hose---this prevents freezing of water in the pipes inside the house resulting in bursting of those pipes.
  • Make sure your sub pump is working properly. When discharge lines become frozen or clogged, the system fails. Discharge lines should be clear and covered.
  • Check for missing shingles on the roof---the building might be in danger of flood the next time it rains.
  • Purchase salt before the first snow---so you are prepared early!

If your East Mahoning County business or home loses the battle with Winter, we are here to help! We have crews available 24/7, 365 to make any snow storm disaster, “Like it never even happened.”
