How to Prevent Vandalism at Your Youngstown Business
Using cameras the perpetrator can be identified by police. You may receive a deduction on your insurance policy for the installation of cameras.
One of the most disheartening things that can happen to any business owner is vandalization to your building. Unfortunately, vandals can strike anywhere. SERVPRO of East Mahoning County is here to outline some steps you can take to protect your business and discourage any foul play at your establishment.
Bright Lights. This is one of the key factors in keeping your property safe. Well lit areas make it difficult for criminals to be so inconspicuous. Work with a lightning specialist and be sure to change the lightbulbs regularly.
Installing Cameras. This is a pricier option, but it is usually worth the money. Firstly, it gives you proof. Secondly, the perpetrator can be identified by police. You may even receive a deduction on your insurance policy for the installation of cameras.
Use Unbreakable Glass. Glass that is break resistant is much harder to penetrate and can cause a scene. Most criminals will not want to try and spend the extra time to try and break it.
Keep Premise Orderly. Disorder can attract offenders. Be sure to make sure the property is clear of trash and is overall neat and tidy.
Don’t Let It Go. If your business does suffer from any kind of property damage from vandalism…remove the graffiti promptly. You should also quickly make any repairs to the building if there was damage. Vandalism tends to create more vandalism and can motivate perpetrators to come back.
Property Insurance. Get with your insurance agent and make sure your policy covers vandalism. Most of the time businessowners are on an “all risk” policy, meaning vandalism is covered. If your building is vacant---make sure your agent knows this. There is a special policy for vacant buildings.
SERVPRO of East Mahoning County will act quickly to remove vandalism and graffiti from home and commercial spaces. In addition to removing spray-painted graffiti from exterior walls, we can also clean driveways, walkways, asphalt, metals, wood, glass, plastic, and masonry. Our highly trained technicians can offer the following services:
If your Youngstown home or business has been affected by vandals…call SERVPRO of East Mahoning county. Vandalism and Graffiti Cleanup is one of our ancillary services. Our SERVPRO professionals are available 24 hour a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Follow us on Facebook for more of our services and more tips of the trade.

Is Bleach Effective in Cleaning Up Mold at my East Mahoning County Home?
To get right to the point. Bleach does not kill mold.
Living in the Valley, you know mold is inevitable. Mold is everywhere. And most homes have it. Especially houses with basements. What can you do as a homeowner to try and control it? Is bleach an effective method to kill the mold? Allow SERVPRO of East Mahoning County to deliberate this approach.
To get right to the point. Bleach does not kill mold. According to the EPA…” Biocides are substances that can destroy living organisms. The use of a chemical or biocide that kills organisms such as mold (chlorine bleach, for example) is not recommended as a routine practice during mold cleanup.”
But why not? The EPA has not always had this stance on the subject. In fact, sources such as the Huffington Post and the CDC still suggest using bleach to kill mold. It is not that bleach is not effective at all. It is the fact that it does not work on all surfaces. If we are talking about hard materials such as tile, sure bleach can work to remove mold. But if we are talking drywall or other porous materials…think again. Mold has roots---that spread. The only true effective way to get rid of mold in your walls--- is to take the walls out.
Take a peek at your Clorox bottle… (if you are lucky enough to have one in 2021.) It is meant for non-porous surfaces, right? That is because it is only capable of attacking surface mold. It will not destroy those roots that have embedded themselves in your basement drywall.
Some restoration companies advertise “mold removal” and may even guarantee to remove all mold. This is a fallacy because removing all mold from a house or business is impossible; microscopic mold spores exist almost everywhere, both indoors and outdoors. Here are the facts:
- Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors, and outdoors.
- Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
- Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants.
- Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return.
- Mold often produces a strong, musty odor and can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
- Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.
So, put down the bleach bottle and call the experts at SERVPRO of East Mahoning County. We are here to evaluate your mold problem at your Youngstown home or business. This is the cornerstone of our business. And we have the best equipment, education, and employees to take care of any mold problems or questions. Ask an Agent: Am I Covered If a Tree Falls on My Youngstown Home?
If the tree doesn’t hit your home or a structure on your property, such as a detached garage, generally there is no coverage for clean-up.
What if it wasn’t on my property? What about the removal? Will my policy cover the cost of the tree? How about the clean-up if it damages my home?
We have a lot of questions when something happens. Especially when it comes to our homes. SERVPRO of East Mahoning County knows how much anxiety and stress comes from home disasters. And that’s why we are here to help. Let’s ask one of our team members, who is a licensed insurance agent, some common questions dealing with tree damage to the home.
- What if the tree belongs to my neighbor, but it hits my home?
That is not an issue. You are insured no matter who owns the tree. Most likely, if your carrier decides to pay for the loss; they will continue with a process called “subrogation.” This is when they will write the check for the damage to you, but then they will follow-up on their end to get the money back from your neighbor’s policy. If your insurer is successful in getting the money back, sometimes you even get your deductible back. Sweet deal, right?
- As the homeowner, am I responsible for the removal of the tree? Or do I have coverage?
You most likely have some removal coverage. A standard amount on a homeowner’s policy generally falls in between $500-$1000, per tree. But it usually has to cause some sort of damage. If the tree doesn’t hit your home or a structure on your property, such as a detached garage, generally there is no coverage for clean-up. So, in laymen’s terms---property damage usually has to occur for clean-up to be covered.
- What if the tree was a Cherry tree, and it was worth money? Am I covered?
The Insurance Information Institute knows “stately trees and landscaping add value to a property and can be costly to replace. Standard homeowners insurance policies cover damage to trees and shrubs due to disasters or an accident—like fire, lightning, explosion, theft, aircraft, vehicles not owned by the resident, vandalism and malicious mischief.” So, if it is one of the losses mentioned…yes there is some coverage. But usually there is a cap per tree. (And honestly, it is not very much if the tree is valuable.) A good piece of advice is to talk with your agent NOW (before a disaster) and schedule costly trees on your policy. This is usually not expensive to do, and it covers the tree’s value properly.
- Who pays SERVPRO of East Mahoning County?
For a stress-free claims process, SERVPRO of East Mahoning County helps manage the insurance paperwork and process. We deal directly with your agent to make the most of your coverage. However, in order to start our emergency and restoration service, you must sign the “Service Authorization Form.” This allows us to take action immediately. We do not know your insurance coverage; therefore, it is impossible for us to know exactly what your insurance will cover. It is important to understand you are financially responsible for our services if you are not covered. Your deductible is payable before we start work. If for any reason insurance coverage cannot be verified at the time of our emergency service, an additional deposit may be required.
- Why should I choose SERVPRO for my storm damage?
Lower Recovery Costs – The SERVPRO® system helps save money. Emergency Mitigation Services help minimize additional property damages. SERVPRO® Franchise Professionals use specialized test equipment to determine hidden issues. Restoration versus replacement of contents saves heirlooms and money too. By using advanced techniques, SERVPRO® Franchise Professionals monitor and ensure your property is put back the way it was before the disaster.

Why Does Mold Grow on the Bread in Your Kitchen?
Although mold is most easily discovered on bread or even the potatoes, the terrifying truth is that mold can grow anywhere in your kitchen.
Why Does Mold Grow on the Bread in Your Kitchen?
You went grocery shopping on Saturday and when you go to make a sandwich Tuesday morning you notice there is already mold growing on your bread. It can’t be so!
Few things are more frustrating than buying groceries only to have them turn moldy in just a few days. If you keep bread on your counter, you may wonder why mold often grows quickly on it. To understand bread mold, you must know a few things about general mold growth.
Mold Reproduces Through Spores
Unlike plants that usually need seeds to spread, mold reproduces through tiny microscopic spores. For spores to take hold, they often need both humidity and a food source. As such, mold is often common in area of your home that are frequently wet.
You may find mold in the following rooms:
- Laundry rooms
Kitchen Mold May Be in a Few Places
Although mold is most easily discovered on bread or even the potatoes, the terrifying truth is that mold can grow anywhere in your kitchen. In fact, you may even notice mold in your refrigerator.
Refrigerator mold often occurs inside appliances for a few reasons. First, humidity levels can be high in refrigerators. Also, your refrigerator likely has ample food sources to support mold and fungus growth.
Removing Mold May Not Be Simple
If you stroll down the cleaning aisle in your grocery store, there are likely dozens of products that claim to kill mold. Unfortunately, these products often only mask the appearance of mold. A cleaning product may bleach mold without actually killing it. While you assume mold is gone from your kitchen, spores continue to move around your home on air currents.
Seeing bread mold may cause you to lose your appetite. Unfortunately, it could indicate a larger mold problem in your home. By understanding how mold reproduces, you can develop a strategy for stopping mold. Nonetheless, you may need professional assistance to help you control mold in your kitchen.
If you find mold in your kitchen, or anywhere in your home or business, do not hesitate to call SERVPRO of East Mahoning County. We are mold mitigation professionals and will eliminate the mold spores. If you need our help, give us a call today!

Sleepiness is a Safety Hazard
SERVPRO of East Mahoning County wants you to get enough sleep and stay stress-free!
Although we may not be able to agree on if it is called soda or pop, or fireflies or lightening bugs; I think one thing we can all relate to is being tired. If you are old enough to be able to read, there is a good chance you have felt tired at least one day in your life. Everyone has the same number of hours in a day, but the to-do list can seem never-ending.
Lack of sleep can lead to multiple consequences and sometimes be quite dangerous in the workplace.
- Accidents can happen no matter what, whether you are at home, work, or in the car, with 12 hours of sleep or 4. However, there are many precautions and guidelines put in place to help prevent accidents from happening. If you are driving and feeling extra sleepy, pull over and take a quick 20-minute cat nap. Getting enough sleep at night is just one way to help prevent accidents.
- Sleep deprivation can cause issues when it comes to memory. It is very normal to forget things occasionally, but if you are sleep deprived, your memory loss can become more frequent and start affecting your work. Being well-rested each day can help you do your best for your co-workers and customers.
- If you are lacking sleep, it can be more difficult to concentrate and focus on a task. In addition, if you are a usual multi-tasker, it can be harder to juggle many ideas at once.
- Lastly, a lack of sleep can lead to a weakened immune system. Especially if you are consistently not getting enough sleep each night. When your immune system is weakened, you are much more likely to get sick.
SERVPRO of East Mahoning County wants you to stay as safe, well-rested, and healthy as possible. We urge you to be mindful and take care of yourself by resting your body and mind when you are tired.

Working with Adjusters & Agents of Canfield, OH
We use cutting edge technology, highly trained and experienced professionals who obtain the latest IICRC certifications.
When any type of disaster takes place, whether it be in a home or commercial property there are three moving parts that work together to fully restore the damage. The property owner first discovers the damage and calls their insurance agent, the agent will then call SERVPRO® of East Mahoning County to come out and get ready to start the restoration process. Before that can happen, the agent and the restoration company will meet with the adjuster. The adjuster will assess the damage and make the final decision on the total ‘scope’ of work that is necessary to be done by SERVPRO® and eventually paid for by the insurance claim.
We understand insurance agents have a responsibility to keep claims costs a low as possible while still being sure adequate service is provided to fully restore any damage that took place. Here at SERVPRO® of East Mahoning County we strive to do these key things in making this process go as smooth as possible:
Restoring the property is our priority. We respond at any time and to any call letting the property owner feel as at ease as possible in this time. We then make sure any loss is pretested to ensure it indeed can be restored and not need to be replaced. If possible, it always less expensive to restore rather than replace items.
We then create an itemized loss list; clearly stating what inventory is lost, what needs replaced, and what can be restored. This list will be in Excel format with detailed reports and pictures.
We then begin the restoration process using cutting edge technology, highly trained and experienced professionals who obtain the latest IICRC certifications in fire and water restoration. We see this process all the way through making sure the needs of the property owner, insurance agent, and adjuster are met fully.

The stigma around certain viruses can greatly hinder the prevention and treatment of the virus itself
Common virus symptoms can be a fever, cough, and shortness of breath. In severe cases it can cause pneumonia, acute respiratory syndrome, and even kidney failure. Viruses are believed to be transmitted by person-to-person interaction. More specifically, respiratory droplets leaving an infected person’s body when they sneeze or cough. Often-times between people within 6 feet of each other.
Viruses often-times cause anxiety, fear, and a lot of confusion. These things can often lead to stereotypes and stigmas. Stigmas can have a ‘snowball effect’ and be very difficult to reverse. The harmful stigma around this disease is causing:
- People to hide the illness to avoid discrimination
- Prevent people from receiving healthcare as soon as possible
- Discouraging them from practicing the healthy behaviors health experts call for
Everyone from governments, media, key influencers, to companies play an integral role in the prevention and abolishment of this stigma. Everyone is encouraged to be thoughtful and objective when communicating on social, digital, and print media.
Below are some ways/actions we all can take in stigmas caused by viruses:
- Spread only the facts – stigmas are only increased when information on how the virus is transmitted and prevented is false
- Share stories – stories and images of local people that have had viruses and recovered from it will go a long way in limiting the fear around this disease.
- Objective reporting – the reporting done by national and local media should be completely objective, only reiterating information based upon evidence. This will reduce the stigmatization greatly.
For more about what you can do to prevent the transmission of any virus stay in touch with our Facebook page.
When is the Best Time to Have Your HVAC System Cleaned?
Air duct cleaning services in Boardman, Ohio
We may not think about it all the time, but our air ducts are almost always working hard to heat or cool your home. Over time, the system can build-up dust, pollen, and other allergens requiring it to be cleaned out. Having your HVAC system regularly cleaned will not only help it run more efficiently but also potentially prevent larger and more expensive problems.
But when is the best time to schedule your duct cleaning?
Once Spring has Sprung
Spring is the best time to get your HVAC system cleaned for several reasons. Firstly, your air conditioning and heat will need to be shut off while the technician does their work. Since spring has a more optimal temperature than the freezing cold winter or smoldering hot summer, your home will be more comfortable while the ducts are being cleaned.
Another reason spring is the ideal time is that it rains often during these months. The rain is a natural way to rid the air or airborne allergens and pollen. Once the rain washes these particles to the ground, you can be sure your ducts will be rid of the debris.
Finally, moisture in the air can cause a big problem for your HVAC system. Once spring and summer hits, the humidity rises, and that moist air circulates through your air ducts. When this air mixes with the existing dust and dirt buildup in the ducts, a mold problem can occur. For this reason, it is best to have your ducts cleaned out before mold has any chance of thriving in your air ducts.
How Often Should it be Done?
It is recommended that homeowners get their ducts cleaned every three to five years. Under certain circumstances, however, it may need to be done more often. This applies if you suffer from allergies, have pets, have a smoker in the house, or have a very high traffic home. You may need to get them cleaned every two years, or even once a year. Additionally, if you are suffering severe allergy flare-ups, regardless of how long it has been since your HVAC system was last cleaned, you may greatly benefit from having the ducts cleaned.
SERVPRO is always here to help!
Now is the perfect time to have your HVAC system cleaned. Here at SERVPRO, our team of highly trained technicians that are always here to help. By ensuring your air ducts are clean, you are improving the health of your family, and preventing a potential problem in the future.

Carpet Cleaning Services in Mahoning County OH
Professional carpet cleaning technicians in Mahoning County are here to help!
Are the carpets in your home or business actually clean? When was the last time you had the opportunity to detail clean the carpet in your home or business?
To the naked eye, you may look at your carpets and think they are clean.
However, if your cleaning method is just vacuuming, this does that your floors are clean. Although vacuuming your carpets daily is a great habit to be in, your carpets should also receive a steam cleaning as well to ensure longevity and a healthy lifestyle. This is especially true if you have small children or pets in your home.
So what’s the importance of having your carpets professionally cleaned?
Proper maintenance and cleaning of your carpets:
- Prolongs the life of your carpet. Maintaining a regular cleaning schedule of your carpets will help protect your carpet investment in your home or business while increasing the longevity.
- Removes trapped pollutants. There is nothing like the feeling of soft, plush carpet below your feet. However, these same carpet fibers are a perfect home for things like pet dander, dirt, and pollen. Seasonal allergies are very common and can be significantly reduced by having the carpets cleaned and removing these pollutants from your home and or business.
- Easier maintenance. Soils found in carpets are mostly made by gritty and dry particles which can be very abrasive to the pile of your carpet. Over time, the soil becomes embedded into the carpet piles and can lead to premature wear on your carpet fibers. Keeping your carpets properly maintained means that most dry soils can be removed with regular vacuuming.
- Helps complement the overall appearance of your carpeted room. Cleaned and well-maintained carpets say a lot about the cleanliness of your home or business. Dirty carpets can be an attention-getter as soon as someone steps foot into that room. Having professionally cleaned carpets can avoid that situation and make for a better living and work experience.
- Removes dust mites and mold spores. While dust mites themselves may not be a problem, the feces and remnants of old body particles are what cause the allergies. Anytime your carpet has foot traffic it is stirring up the pollutants into the air which means you are essentially breathing that in. Given the opportunity and optimal conditions, mold can grow in your carpets as well. Once the mold begins to spread it will eventually make its way through the rest of your home. Regular cleaning can remove the mold spores before they have a chance to spread and cause further damage.
- Removes stains and spots. Your carpets may acquire a variety of stains and soils over time. Removing these spots and stains quickly can protect your carpets from any further damage.
Remember it is always better to have a pro-active approach rather than a reactive approach when it comes to the carpets in your homes or business. Next time you’re looking for a team to professionally clean and restore your carpets – we are here to help! Call us today at 330-536-7477!

SERVPRO Assures Quality Construction
At SERVPRO, we guarantee the quality of our work and ensure the best possible final product in a multitude of different ways.
One such method is by letting the various rebuilding materials acclimate for the necessary amount of time.
When a material acclimates, the item's physical temperature changes to match that of the room that it is being installed in.
This is important for several reasons. Not only is the material much easier to work with once it has properly acclimated, but it helps to eliminate the possibility of problems arising in the final product.
Naturally, materials will expand and contract as their temperature changes. A variety of issues can potentially occur if a material is installed before this acclimation process is completed. Gaps can form between separate sheets of drywall, floor boards can buckle, or paneling can get a rippling effect.
These problems not only cause the final product to lose its aesthetically pleasing look, but the material itself must be replaced. Different materials need to acclimate for differing amounts of time as well. All materials must acclimate for a minimum of twenty-four hours; however, some take much longer.
Two examples of such materials are hardwood plank flooring (three to four days) and snap-lock laminate flooring (minimum of forty-eight hours).
Our construction project managers are always there to help with these types of questions, as well as any others, so feel free to ask!
