Residential fires occur every day throughout the United States. One of the deadliest mistakes a homeowner can make is to go back into a burning home after belongings or even pets. SERVPRO of East Mahoning County wants to keep our residents safe. Here is what you shouldn’t do.

The National Fire Protection Association website states that once away from a burning building, it is imperative to stay outside.

Firefighters and 911 can assist in the retrieval of belonging, pets, and even children.

Fire 9 Prevention states, “Carbon monoxide is a major product of combustion. Carbon monoxide or CO combines with your red blood cells, reduces oxygen to your brain and attacks your central nervous system. Effects of CO poisoning include impaired judgment and deterioration of motor skills (especially your ability to walk.) So, your ability to make sound decisions may be diminished by the CO you inhaled exiting the building. Furthermore, your coordination may be so impaired you will not be able to perform whatever you plan to do back inside the fire.”

SERVPRO of East Mahoning County specializes in fire and water damage restoration. We have the specific damage restoration training, personnel, and equipment and can quickly restore your home so it looks "Like it never even happened."

What To Do After A Fire

  • Limit movement in the home to prevent soot particles from being embedded into upholstery and carpets.
  • Keep hands clean so as not to further soil upholstery, walls and woodwork.
  • Place clean towels or old linens on rugs, upholstery and carpet traffic areas.
  • If electricity is off, empty freezer and refrigerator and prop doors open.
  • Clean and protect chrome with light coating of petroleum jelly or oil.
  • Wash houseplants on both sides of leaves.
  • Change HVAC filter.
  • Tape double layers of cheesecloth over air registers.
